Stem Cells are found in multicellular organisms and are characterized by their abilities of self-renewal and pluripotency. These cells can undergo numerous rounds of mitosis while maintaining a state of undifferentiation or give rise to any mature cell type such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell. The ability of stem cells to self-renew and give rise to subsequent generations that can differentiate offers a large potential to culture tissues that can replace diseased and damaged tissues in the body, without the risk of rejection and side effects.

Much of the Australian stem cell research is directed through the Australian Stem Cell Centre, a Biotechnology Centre of Excellence established by the Australian Government in 2003. The Centre brings together scientists from around Australia to research both embryonic and adult stem cells.

The main areas of research for stem cell therapies target:
