An estimated 275 Australians develop diabetes every day. The 2005 Australian AusDiab Follow-up Study (Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study) showed that 1.7 million Australians have diabetes but that up to half of the cases of type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed. By 2031 it is estimated that 3.3 million Australians will have type 2 diabetes (Vos et al., 2004).

While treatments for both types of diabetes exist, neither is curable and effective treatments for obesity are yet to be developed. Desire to find cures for diabetes, obesity and related metabolic syndrome are pushing the demand for innovative reagents for research in this area.  This is particularly true in Australia where research into diabetes alone has dramatically expanded since 2000:

  • In 2009, more than $63 million was expended by the NHMRC on 341 active research grants investigating diabetes - this has grown from just over $10M in 2000 and is expected to grow again in 2010.
  • Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) has announced funding of approximately $2 million for 27 new projects for 2010 - an increase of 14%.

Life Research is excited to be offering a Research Area category specifically for Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome.

Fluorescence Proteins - BioVision

Biovision

Recombinant EGFP

Recombinant EGFP expressed from E. coli

Biovision offers the brightest green fluorescence protein on the market. The Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein (EGFP) is a 29 kDa recombinant protein with Ex/Em = 488/507 nm. The green fluorescent protein was expressed and purified from transformed E. coli using a method that ensures high purity and maximal fluorescence. The EGFP protein is suitable as control reagents for expression studies. Applications include: standards for SDS-PAGE, Western blot analysis, calibration of fluorometers, flow cytometers, and fluorescence microscope, microinjection of EGFP into cells and tissues, etc.

ProSci Swine H1N1 Antibodies

14/02/2010

Influenza A virus includes many variants, classified in part by their display of the surface glycoproteins hemagglutinin (e.g. H1-16) and neuraminidase (e.g. N1-9). Subtype H1N1 has been the most common cause of influenza in humans. In 2009, the World Health Organization proclaimed a new strain of H1N1, endemic in pigs, to be responsible for a human pandemic and thus called “swine flu.”

Supplier ProSci offers numerous polyclonal antibodies to Influenza A H1N1 strains associated with “swine” influenza as well as “seasonal” influenza. Antibodies are available with specificity to either swine-origin or seasonal H1N1 surface glycoproteins Neuraminidase and Hemagglutinin, or which are reactive with either strain. ProSci’s Swine-Origin and Seasonal Flu H1N1 Protein Detection Set includes antibodies to various different epitopes from the HA and NA proteins. Applications for each antibody may include ELISA and/or Western Blot; see individual product descriptions.
